Tuberculosis (incl. Drug Resistant / Complex TB)

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs. It is fully treatable, and with the correct course of medication most people make a complete recovery. Dr. Shah has extensive experience managing even the most complex drug-resistant cases using the latest evidence-based guidelines.

Symptoms to Watch

  • Persistent cough lasting more than two to three weeks
  • Coughing up blood or blood-stained sputum
  • Drenching night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent low-grade fever
  • Fatigue and loss of energy
  • Chest pain, especially when breathing or coughing

How We Diagnose

  1. 1Sputum smear and culture — the definitive tests to confirm TB
  2. 2GeneXpert MTB/RIF test to detect TB and drug resistance rapidly within hours
  3. 3Chest X-ray to assess the extent and pattern of lung involvement
  4. 4Tuberculin skin test (Mantoux) or IGRA blood test for latent TB screening
  5. 5CT scan for complex, disseminated, or extrapulmonary cases
  6. 6Drug sensitivity testing to guide treatment in drug-resistant TB

Your Treatment Plan

  • Standard four-drug regimen (HRZE) for drug-sensitive TB, typically six months
  • Individualised regimen design for MDR-TB or XDR-TB based on sensitivity testing
  • DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment) support to ensure adherence and cure
  • Regular monitoring of treatment response and side effects
  • Contact tracing advice to protect household and close contacts
  • Coordination with RNTCP and government TB programmes where applicable
