Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis — commonly called hay fever — is an immune reaction to airborne substances such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. It causes the nose and eyes to become irritated and inflamed. Treatment can dramatically reduce symptoms and improve day-to-day quality of life.

Symptoms to Watch

  • Frequent sneezing, especially in the morning
  • Blocked or persistently runny nose
  • Itchy, watery, or red eyes
  • Itchy throat, roof of the mouth, or ears
  • Postnasal drip causing a tickling cough or sore throat
  • Fatigue from poor sleep due to nasal congestion

How We Diagnose

  1. 1Skin prick test to identify specific allergens causing your reaction
  2. 2Blood test (specific IgE) if skin testing is not suitable
  3. 3Nasal endoscopy if structural problems such as polyps are suspected
  4. 4Symptom diary review to identify seasonal or year-round patterns

Your Treatment Plan

  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation at the source
  • Antihistamine tablets or nasal sprays for immediate symptom relief
  • Decongestants for short-term relief of severe nasal blockage
  • Allergen immunotherapy — allergy shots or drops — for long-term desensitisation
  • Practical guidance on reducing your exposure to specific triggers at home and work
